Fatwa on: Frequently asked questions related to what to do or not to do while fasting
"In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful"
Alhamdulillah wasalatu wasalmu Alla Saydina Mohamed. Assalamu alaikum wa rahmutul Allahi wa barrakuthu

Question: Can we go for blood test while we are fasting?
Answer:
Yes, if it necessary and requested by doctor, other way do it after Iftar.

Question: Does vomiting invalidates the fasting?
Answer:
It depends. If the person provoke the vomiting, then the fasting will be broken and the day will have to be made up. But, if the vomiting is involuntary, due to an illness, InshaAllah, he can continue with his fasting. This based on the statement of our messanger " Whoever is forced to vomit, he does not have to make up for the fast, and whoever makes himself vomit, he must make up for the fast" (Abu Dawud No. 2380, At-Thirmithi, no. 720)

Question: Can we extract a tooth or go to the dentist while fasting?
Answer:
Yes, if it an emergency and recommended by the dentist, but make sure nothing goes through the throat.

Question: Can we use the “Miswak” while fasting?
Answer:
Yes we can use it but, we have to make sure that no saliva goes through your throat. The answer is based on the Hadith of the Prophet (s.w.a.) that says:” Because I know it is difficult for my Umah, other way, I would command them to use the miswak at every salat.”

Question: If someone realized, after sunrise, that he had a piece of food got stuck between his teeth from soohur, and the person purposely swallowed it, is his fasting still valid?
Answer:
The majority of the Ulamah, agrees that the person will lose his day. But, some of the Ulamah like Abu Hanifah (may Allah be pleased with him), say that if the size of the piece of food is smaller than the size of a chick pea, it is okay to eat it because that piece food was considered as already eaten on time.

Question: If a person has food in his mouth and he hears the Adan, what he should do, swallow the food or throw it?
Answer:
If the food or drink already in the mouth, he could swallow it, otherwise he must stop.

Question: What happens if the menses of a woman stops during a day of fasting, what she should do?
Answer:
She should take a shower (gusulh) and do not eat until Magrib and repeat the fasting day.

Question: What about if the menses come during a fasting day, does the woman have to continue fasting ?
Answer:
She has to break her fasting right away. She must eat. It is Haram to fast even one minute. Additionally, she must repeat the fasting day.

Question: Is a pregnant or a nursing woman allowed to fast?
Answer:
If she is able to do it, she should do it. But, if she fears about her baby she doesn’t have to fast. She should make up her missing days before the next Ramadan. Otherwise, in addition to fasting for the missing days, she will have to feed one poor person for each day missed.

Question: Is it allowed to use ear drops or eye drops?
Answer:
If it is medically needed, it is allowed to use them, with the exception of nose drops which are not allowed.

Question: If a person is old and ill, is he commanded to fast?
Answer:
If the person is old and ill and cannot fast, he has to feed one poor person per each day missed.

Question: Can a person use injections while fasting?
Answer:
If the injections are prescribed for a medical treatment it is allowed, with the exception of injections for the purpose of nourishment (food). If the medically prescribed injection can be postponed after Magrib, it should be postponed.
