Islamic Marriage Requirements
An Islamic marriage (Nikah) requires:
- Mutual consent of both the bride and groom.
- A Wali (guardian) for the bride:
- For a Muslim woman: a righteous Muslim male guardian, such as her father, grandfather, brother, uncle, or son (if applicable).
- For a non-Muslim woman: a non-Muslim male relative, such as her father or another close male relative.
- At least two righteous male witnesses. If witnesses are not available, our Masjid can provide them.
- Agreement on the Mahr (dowry) to be given to the bride.
The Nikah is performed by Imam Sheikh Mostafa, a New York City–registered marriage officiant. He can conduct both the Islamic marriage ceremony and the civil marriage ceremony on the same day.
No. A Nikah makes the couple married according to the religion of Islam. Legal marriage status is established only after completing the civil marriage requirements of the appropriate government authority.
Yes. A valid New York City marriage license must be presented before the Nikah ceremony can be conducted.
Marriage Application Form
A non-refundable deposit of $100 (cash only) is due when the Marriage Application is submitted. This fee covers administrative processing of the Marriage Certificate and preparation of the Islamic Marriage Certificate paperwork. The remaining balance of $200 is due on the day of the Nikah ceremony. If the person lacks funds for this fee/donation, please contact the Imam at

Scheduling Your Nikah Ceremony
To schedule your wedding ceremony (Nikah), please follow these steps:
1. Contact Us
Email us as early as possible at imam@masjidmanhattan.com. Please include your preferred date and time, along with the expected number of guests.
2. Complete the Marriage Application
Once availability is confirmed, you will be required to complete a Marriage Application Form. The completed form must be submitted in person along with:

The total required donation for the Nikah services will be $300. A non-refundable deposit of $100 (cash only) is due when the Marriage Application is submitted. This fee covers administrative processing of the Marriage Certificate and preparation of the Islamic Marriage Certificate paperwork.
